How Owl’s Nest Recovery Transformed My Life: Halie’s Story

Halie G.

They don’t call addiction the family disease for nothing. Growing up in a home impacted by the toll of addiction, Halie was no stranger to its devastating effects. She was just 13 when she lost her mother to substance abuse, and despite her youth, she soon turned to the very thing that had taken her mother’s life, to help her cope with the loss. What started as an escape quickly spiraled into an uncontrollable addiction.

"Even My Daughter Couldn’t Save Me"

Over the years, Halie’s addiction grew and deepened. Despite academic success and a promising future, the drugs took priority over everything.

"I had been accepted into major universities, and I had a bright future in front of me. Instead of following my dream, I let drugs and alcohol completely destroy my life."

When she became a mother at 21, Halie hoped the love for her daughter would help her stop drinking. But addiction doesn’t work that way.

"Even the love that I had for my daughter wasn’t enough to help me quit drinking. My disease had progressed so much that nothing was going to stop me."

Jail time, DUI charges, and a growing list of consequences followed. Eventually, Halie found herself at a crossroads—continue down a path of destruction or seek help.

The Gift of Desperation

Thinking she could control her drinking, Halie attempted outpatient programs, support meetings, and even different treatment centers. But nothing stuck. She was stuck thinking that if she could just manage her addiction then she could somehow maintain a “normal” life.

"I tried everything I could to be a successful drinker, a successful drug user, and I could never do that."

It’s when she heard about Owl’s Nest Recovery that everything shifted. She had seen the program change lives—people she knew had gone through it and come out stronger. Armed with the gift of desperation, she decided to give it a shot.

The Power of Community

From the moment Halie walked through the doors at Owl’s Nest, something felt different.

"I was greeted with love that I’d never experienced. When I came in, I had no friends. I didn’t know what friendship was. And today, I’m surrounded by people that love me and truly care about my life and my recovery."

Through the 12-step program, guidance from her sponsor, and the unwavering support of her new community, Halie began to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

"I Got My Life Back"

Today, Halie is not just sober—she’s thriving. Her daughter is back in her life, her family loves and trusts her again, and she’s discovered a happiness she never thought possible.

"Owl’s Nest has not only taught me how to get sober. It has taught me how to stay sober and to be happy about my sobriety, to be beneficial to other people, to feel like I’m actually doing something with my life."

Recovery isn’t just about putting down the bottle or walking away from drugs. It’s about learning to love yourself again, finding purpose, and embracing the life you were always meant to live.

"It taught me how to be a good person, to look in the mirror, and to love the person that I am."
