If you’ve ever looked in the mirror and wondered how alcohol addiction managed to steal so much from you—this one’s for you. Doug, a proud Texan, shares his journey from hospital bed to healing at The Owl’s Nest.

“It Was Time to Do Something About It.”

Doug’s relationship with alcohol started decades ago.

“I’m from Dallas, Texas,” Doug shared. “Through the years I’ve had marriages and successes in different areas of my life but alcohol ruined everything. Because of alcohol, it was all taken away from me.”

Like so many people who struggle with alcoholism, Doug’s life was a mix of wins and losses - career highs and relationship lows, good intentions, and hard lessons. Underlying all of it though, was alcohol.

The Wake-Up Call

Doug's turning point came in 2009, while lying in a hospital bed in Dallas.

“I was in a hospital...my life on the line...that’s when I realized it’s time to do something about it.”

He didn’t know it yet, but his life was about to change thanks to a simple piece of paper.

“I was presented with a brochure about the Owl’s Nest,” Doug remembered. “I pursued the help they offered.”

“I Found the Solution to My Problems.”

Doug made his way to Florence, SC, where he says his healing really began in earnest.

“I got here at the Owl’s Nest, where I found the solution to my problems,” he said. “From there, they worked with me to get through the steps.”

Anyone who’s gone through addiction treatment knows it’s not easy. But it works. Doug stuck with it—and he’s got the receipts to prove it.

“Today, I have a relationship with my kids. I’m able to hold a job. And I just have a real host of friends that are true friends to me today.”

True friends. You don’t hear that often in active addiction. But in recovery? It’s one of the sweetest perks.

If You’re Struggling, Consider This Your Sign

Doug gets it. He’s been there. He knows what it’s like to watch your life unravel. But he also knows what’s waiting on the other side.

“So if you’re struggling with the problem of alcohol or drugs,” he said, “please consider The Owl’s Nest.” Because choosing to recover is choosing life.
